    Acquisition of acid vapor and aerosol concentration data for use in dry deposition studies in the South Coast Air Basin

    An atmospheric monitoring network was operated throughout the South Coast Air Basin in the greater Los Angeles area during the year 1986. The primary objective of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal concentration distributions of atmospheric gas phase and particulate phase acids and bases in support of the California Air Resources Board's dry deposition research program. Gaseous pollutants measured include HNO_3, HCl, HF, HBr, formic acid, acetic acid and ammonia. The chemical composition of the airborne particulate matter complex was examined in three size ranges: fine particles (less than 2.2 μm aerodynamic diameter, AD), PM_(10) (less than 10 μm AD) and total particles (no size discrimination). Upwind of the air basin at San Nicolas Island, gas phase acids concentrations are very low: averaging 0.3 μg m^(-3) (0.1 ppb) for HNO_3, 0.8 μg m^(-3) for HCl, 0.13 μg m^(-3) for HF, and 2.6 μg m^(-3) for formic acid. Annual average HN03 concentrations ranged from 3.1 μg m^(-3) (1.2 ppb) near the Southern California coast to 6.9 μg m^(-3) (2.7 ppb) at an inland site in the San Gabriel Mountains. HCl concentrations within the South Coast Air Basin averaged from 0.8 μg m^(-3) to 1.8 μg m^(-3) during the year 1986. Long-term average HF concentrations within the air basin are very low, in the range from 0.14 to 0.22 μg m^(-3) between monitoring sites. Long-term average formic acid concentrations are lowest near the coastline (5.0 μg m^(-3) at Hawthorne), with the highest average concentrations (10.7 μg m^(-3)) observed inland at Upland. Ammonia concentrations at low elevation within the South Coast Air Basin average from 2.1 μg m^(-3) to 4.4 μg m^(-3) at all sites except Rubidoux. Rubidoux is located directly downwind of a large ammonia source created by dairy farming and other agricultural activities in the Chino area. Ammonia concentrations at Rubidoux average 30 μg m^(-3) during 1986, a factor of approximately 10 higher than elsewhere in the air basin. Annual average PM_(10) mass concentrations within the South Coast Air Basin ranged from 47.0 μg m^(-3) along the coast to 87.4 μg m^(-3) at Rubidoux, the farthest inland monitoring site. Five major aerosol components (carbonaceous material, NO_3^-, SO_4^-, NH_4^+ and soil-related material) accounted for greater than 80% of the annual average PM_(10) mass concentration at all on-land monitoring stations. A peak 24-h average PM_(10) mass concentration of 299 μg m^(-3) was observed at Rubidoux during 1986. That value is a factor of 2 higher than the federal 24-h average PM_(10) concentration standard, and a factor of 6 higher than the State of California PM_(10) standard. More than 40% of the PM_(10) aerosol mass measured at Rubidoux during that peak day event consisted of aerosol nitrates plus ammonium ion. Reaction of gaseous nitric acid to form aerosol nitrates was a major contributor to the high PM_(10) concentrations observed in the Rubidoux area near Riverside, California

    Corruption in bank lending to firms : do competition and information sharing matter?

    Building on the important study by Beck, Demirguc-Kunt and Levine (2006), we examine the effects of borrower and lender competition and information sharing νia credit registries/bureaus on corruption in bank lending. Using the unique World Bank dataset of the World Business Environment Survey (WBES) covering 58 countries and information on credit registries/bureaus and bank regulation assembled by other scholars, we find (1) strong evidence that banking competition reduces lending corruption and (2) the first and robust evidence that information sharing among banks (especially via private bureaus) contributes to reducing corruption in bank lending. We also find that government- and foreign-owned firms as well as exporting firms tend to be subject to less lending corruption, objective courts and better law enforcement tend to reduce lending corruption, and private and foreign ownership of the banking industry are associated with more integrity in lending. These findings pass a number of robustness tests and they are consistent with the predictions of a Nash bargaining model

    Landau-De Gennes theory of nematic liquid\ud crystals: the Oseen-Frank limit and beyond

    We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in W 1,2 , to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and the regularity of the eigenvectors of the Landau-De Gennes global minimizer.\ud \ud \ud We also study the interplay between biaxiality and uniaxiality in Landau-De Gennes global energy minimizers and obtain estimates for various related quantities such as the biaxiality parameter and the size of admissible strongly biaxial regions

    American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging Bench-to-Bedside conference: sensory impairment and cognitive decline in older adults

    This article summarizes the presentations and recommendations of the tenth annual American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging Bench‐to‐Bedside research conference, “Sensory Impairment and Cognitive Decline,” on October 2–3, 2017, in Bethesda, Maryland. The risk of impairment in hearing, vision, and other senses increases with age, and almost 15% of individuals aged 70 and older have dementia. As the number of older adults increases, sensory and cognitive impairments will affect a growing proportion of the population. To limit its scope, this conference focused on sensory impairments affecting vision and hearing. Comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairments in older adults are more common than would be expected by chance alone, suggesting that some common mechanisms might affect these neurological systems. This workshop explored the mechanisms and consequences of comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairment in older adults; effects of sensory loss on the aging brain; and bench‐to‐bedside innovations and research opportunities. Presenters and participants identified many research gaps and questions; the top priorities fell into 3 themes: mechanisms, measurement, and interventions. The workshop delineated specific research questions that provide opportunities to improve outcomes in this growing population.Funding was provided by National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant U13 AG054139-01.     Reliable Bonding of Composite Laminates Using Reflowable Epoxy Resins

    Epoxy matrix composites assembled with adhesives maximize the performance of aerospace structures, but the possibility of forming weak bonds requires the installation of redundant fasteners, which add weight and manufacturing cost. Co-cured joints (e.g. unitized composite structures) are immune to weak bonds because the uncured resin undergoes diffusion and mixing through the joint. A means of co-curing complex structures may reduce the need for redundant fasteners in bondlines. To this end, NASA started the AERoBOND project to develop novel joining materials to enable a secondary-co-cure assembly process. Aerospace epoxy resin systems reformulated with offset stoichiometry prevented the resin from advancing beyond the gel point during a conventional autoclave cure cycle up to 180 C. The offset resins were applied to the joining surfaces of laminate preforms as prepreg. Two surfaces with complimentary offset resins were joined using conventional secondary bonding techniques. Preliminary efforts have indicated that the resulting joint has no discernable interface and appears as a conventional co-cured laminate under optical magnification.     Census of the Local Universe (CLU) Narrow-Band Survey I: Galaxy Catalogs from Preliminary Fields

    We present the Census of the Local Universe (CLU) narrow-band survey to search for emission-line (\ha) galaxies. CLU-\ha~has imaged \approx3π\pi of the sky (26,470~deg2^2) with 4 narrow-band filters that probe a distance out to 200~Mpc. We have obtained spectroscopic follow-up for galaxy candidates in 14 preliminary fields (101.6~deg2^2) to characterize the limits and completeness of the survey. In these preliminary fields, CLU can identify emission lines down to an \ha~flux limit of 101410^{-14}~erg s1 cm2\rm{erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}} at 90\% completeness, and recovers 83\% (67\%) of the \ha~flux from catalogued galaxies in our search volume at the Σ\Sigma=2.5 (Σ\Sigma=5) color excess levels. The contamination from galaxies with no emission lines is 61\% (12\%) for Σ\Sigma=2.5 (Σ\Sigma=5). Also, in the regions of overlap between our preliminary fields and previous emission-line surveys, we recover the majority of the galaxies found in previous surveys and identify an additional \approx300 galaxies. In total, we find 90 galaxies with no previous distance information, several of which are interesting objects: 7 blue compact dwarfs, 1 green pea, and a Seyfert galaxy; we also identified a known planetary nebula. These objects show that the CLU-\ha~survey can be a discovery machine for objects in our own Galaxy and extreme galaxies out to intermediate redshifts. However, the majority of the CLU-\ha~galaxies identified in this work show properties consistent with normal star-forming galaxies.     We prove uniqueness of ground state solutions Q=Q(x)0Q = Q(|x|) \geq 0 for the nonlinear equation (Δ)sQ+QQα+1=0(-\Delta)^s Q + Q - Q^{\alpha+1}= 0 in R\mathbb{R}, where 0<s<10 < s < 1 and 0<α<4s12s0 < \alpha < \frac{4s}{1-2s} for s<1/2s < 1/2 and 0<α<0 < \alpha < \infty for s1/2s \geq 1/2. Here (Δ)s(-\Delta)^s denotes the fractional Laplacian in one dimension. In particular, we generalize (by completely different techniques) the specific uniqueness result obtained by Amick and Toland for s=1/2s=1/2 and α=1\alpha=1 in [Acta Math., \textbf{167} (1991), 107--126]. As a technical key result in this paper, we show that the associated linearized operator L+=(Δ)s+1(α+1)QαL_+ = (-\Delta)^s + 1 - (\alpha+1) Q^\alpha is nondegenerate; i.\,e., its kernel satisfies kerL+=span{Q}\mathrm{ker}\, L_+ = \mathrm{span}\, \{Q'\}. This result about L+L_+ proves a spectral assumption, which plays a central role for the stability of solitary waves and blowup analysis for nonlinear dispersive PDEs with fractional Laplacians, such as the generalized Benjamin-Ono (BO) and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) water wave equations.Comment: 45 page
